The story
behind the name and some history about the Band....
the
history:
the foundation of the band was laid in 2003 when Todd
and David met while working on a project as hired guns. At the
same time, Todd was working with Paul and Melynda on another
project featuring Melynda's vocal talent. the four (and
Charles) came together to form River City Jazz Group. RCJG
toured around Austin playing familiar venues like threadgills,
Nuevo Leone and others. By 2006 we were working several
regular gigs and business was good, but getting 5 musicians to
keep a regular schedule is like herding cats. so we began to
bring other musicians into the group to help fill in when
someone couldn't make a gig. this began the evolution of the concept behind
ˇContrafact! the group.
So what is
a "Contrafact"?
there are a few definitions, but we subscribe to
the musical orientation:
A
contrafact is a new musical composition built out of an
already existing one.
Besides being a common term used frequently by Jazz and Blues
musicians,
this idea perfectly describes how our band has operated and evolved
over the years. Todd, Paul, and David have been the familiar
foundation, then adding new members to build new harmonies and
continually transforming the group's sound. during one recording session around 2006 we think it
was Paul who actually observed that we were a "Contrafact" of a
band, and it stuck! We added the exclamation in the name
to express the authority, surprise, and emotion the group brings
to our music.
We've found
over time that operating as a consortium of musicians vs. a
named group of players always keeps the sound fresh and full of
creativity for our audiences. We continue to extend our group to
talented musicians in the Austin area and beyond through the
virtual recording technology available today.
We look
forward to seeing you at one of our shows, or at your private
event!
